Rotational forces can be used to unfold an umbrella without any solid elements. The umbrella is made of a double membrane similar to a paraglider building a cavity. This cavity is connected to the ambient through air inlets near the axis. By rotation the pneu centrifugal forces are inflating it. Depending on rotational speed and wind forces the pneu is changing its appearance showing fascinating shapes. Waves of low frequency are propagating over the membrane as can be seen in the pictures representing different stages of inflation. To inflate the pneu only the lightweight membrane and air has to be accelerated. For a pneu of 6 meters in diameter a motor of some 300 W is sufficient. The rotational speed is around 1 rotation per second for the competely inflated pneu. The pneu cannot be operated under high windspeeds, thus its ability to create a shelter against stormy rain is restricted. The field of the RotationPneu are special events, the low mass of the material makes it ideal for temporary installation and it can be illuminated from inside or used as a projection screen. The Rotation Pneu can be realized in different shapes. Any shape is possible, which is stable as a pneumatic structure and which has some axial symmetry.
